However in 1610 a group of Benandanti were brought under Inquisition and they were found guilty of committing acts of witchcraft and in fact, of being witches. Some say that the Benandanti was in fact made up of many packs of werewolves long ago. The Night Battles: Witchcraft and Agrarian Cults in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries is a historical study of the benandanti folk custom of 16th and 17th century Friuli, Northeastern Italy. It was written by the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg, then of the University of Bologna, and first published by the company Giulio Einaudi in 1966 under the Italian title of I Benandanti: Stregoneria e culti agrari tra Cinquecento e Seicento. It was later translated into English by John and Anne Tede The benandanti considered themselves soldiers of the good fight, preserving their crops and protecting their villages from the evildoing of witches. The cult persisted in spite of the magical/holy measures provided by the church to protect crops, such as the sprinkling of holy water over the fields, the erection of a cross and the processions and prayers on Rogation Days.

Benandanti werewolves are unique because they are not only a particular type of werewolf, they also carry with them their own unique legend and myth. In fact, the myth of the Benandanti werewolf dies out sometime around 1610, when the Benandanti werewolves become the very things that they had spent their time in the Underworld… Ginzburg goes on to examine how the Inquisition came to believe the benandanti to be witches themselves, and ultimately persecute them out of existence. Considering the benandanti to be "a fertility cult", Ginzburg draws parallels with similar visionary traditions found throughout the Alps and also from the Baltic, such as that of the Livonian werewolf , and also to the widespread folklore Without the Benandanti’s help, the only way to fend off the bad witches was to leave a bowl of clear water outside your home or building. If you forgot to do that, or if the bowl overturned or was washed away in a storm, then the bad witches had carte blanche to relieve themselves in your wine.

Benandanti witches

Operating out of north-east Italy, they were a band who maintained they had the power to exit their physical forms and move by night in what we might call an astral plane or another dimension. The Benandanti are presented powerful executors of, presumably, the Roman Inquisition.

These men transformed into werewolves and went to Hell to take back stolen livestock or crops the Devil had stolen from the people. An old drawing of the Werewolf of Geneva.

An Analysis of Carlo Ginzburg's The Night Battles : Witchcraft

The soul upon his return must find the body in the same conditions in which he had left it, or would not be been able to reenter the body. Propelled by the ambitions of a new Witch, they have begun to try to wipe out the Benandanti altogether and begin the era of the Witches, a time when sickness and death fill the earth. The Witches and The Benandanti rarely meet each other in the physical world - for if either shows himself or herself in the physical world to the other, it would be too easy to kill them in that world altogether. According to stories told by the benandanti themselves, they struggled against evil witches (maladanti) to protect the next season's crops. The benandanti ("Good Walkers") were members of an agrarian visionary tradition in the Friuli district of Northeastern Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries. The benandanti claimed to travel out of their bodies while asleep to struggle against malevolent witches (streghe) in order to ensure good crops for the season to come.
